First Move: Starting Our Organic Family Farm
We’d had our chickens for about a year. We had a steady supply of eggs coming. I had several great sources for local and organic food, and to top it all off, the house was almost to the point that we could finish unpacking. Time to move.
My husband received his new assignment and we started making plans. We were excited about the prospect of being closer to family, but sad to be leaving the Pacific Northwest. Since we didn’t have any choice really, we focused on the positive. We started farm hunting.
We were no longer interested in merely house hunting, we wanted a place with some land. Someplace we could keep our chickens, plant a garden, maybe even raise a beef cow. Essentially we wanted to take this opportunity to start figuring out what we were doing so that we could, someday, become self-sustaining. After much searching, we found the perfect piece of property. The house, as usual, needed some work, but that is the way my husband likes them. So, we sealed the deal and started packing.
