Why I Love Science Fiction and Fantasy

All my life I’ve enjoyed getting lost in the amazing places that books provide. I think that Science Fiction and Fantasy, more than any other genre, feeds the creative need in me. I love to imagine, I love to daydream. I have an intrinsic need to experience new adventures, learn new things, and to do something creative.

Writing Science Fiction and Fantasy allows me to simultaneously engage in so many of the things that I love. I get to imagine new worlds, experience amazing adventures, create entirely new species and previously unheard of technology. In the realm of speculative fiction there are no boundaries. There are no historical facts or figures, save the ones that I invent. If I can imagine an idea, and explain it clearly through my writing, incredible new worlds can exist.

I have been so immersed in editing over the past several months that I began to wonder if I would be able to come up with any new ideas once it was time to write again. Now that novel number two (working title Searcher) is in the hands of my agent, the time has come to put pencil to paper…and I have an idea. I can’t wait to see where it will take me.

What do you love about Science Fiction and Fantasy?

  1. I’m with you on this, Nicole. But beyond the lack of boundaries is another exciting element: a fresh perspective on the human condition. We bring fewer of our preconceptions to a totally fresh world, and the experience provides new ways to look at issues and emotions that are universal (I believe this is true of both readers and writers).

Congrats on the new idea! Don’t you love that feeling? Sorry I missed this the day it came out. Great post! Keep up the good work. :-)

Vaughn, I agree and love this sentiment, a new way to look at issues. Yes, starting a new story is the best feeling. I love being gripped by a new idea and feeling that need to put it down on paper. As far as “missing” I’m trying not to double post so I may have put the link on a different site, still trying to find the right balance! Thank you for the comment.

I would love to hear from you!
